(KDKA) PITTSBURGH Koda, one of the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium's polar bear cubs, had a root canal Sunday.

According to the bear's dentists, the patient came through with flying colors.

"It went extremely well I think," said Dr. David Regine, a dentist. "It went according to the book."

Koda's lower right fang was chipped, which infected the area, causing swelling around his jaw and head.

During his 90-minute root canal, veterinary dentists and human dentists made up the team.

Dr. Regine, of Bridgeville, says the only difference between a polar bear and a person is the size of the tooth.

"I'm used to working on something about this size. When you get something about that size it's totally different, so in essence, you have to make up instrumentation. Some of the stuff I used was plumbing supplies, a turkey skewers. You kind of have to use your imagination. "

Koda will have some discomfort for a day or so, just like humans.

"And since such a small portion of the tooth was actually damaged, he can go out and eat normally right after this," explained Dr. Tom Klein, a veterinarian dentist. "He doesn't need a crown like people would need. It's just a small chip fracture, so he has got a lot of use of the rest of his fang tooth there too."

Koda is expected to rejoin his brother at "The Water's Edge" on Tuesday.
